Berserkotron, the story of two friends (Bert and Ronnie), who take part in a Robot Wars-style competition. Ronnie's your 'average' teenage boy, and Bert is some kind of near child genius, creating all kinds of things with his home chemistry set. Most noticeably is some magic paint that is supposed to make whatever painted with it indestructible.
Now, both Davids writing and the story are basic. There's the theme of the two main characters 'growing apart'. It mostly comes off and two characters who are friends but enjoy different things, but a bit more of an emotional impact would have added to the story.
The artwork doesn't do much for the story. While I respect the choice to go with simpler, stripped down illustrations, the art just doesn't add anything. Compared with the style for the supporting strip "Literature Moon", the art on the main story looks a bit too basic which is a shame. Some of the character designs are questionable too, with Bert and his family looking pretty much like clowns. Beyond the style, page layouts are standard and rigid. There are a few action spots that could have really used a more energetic and dynamic layout to to give a faster page flow.
Berserkotron is pure fantasy escapism, and I can't recommend it as anything more than that. However, one supporting story at the end of issue #1 shows David has another art style. Combined with a solid story, could prove a lot more entertaining. Do I recommend Berserkotron? If you're in the market for escapism, there a better things to try, but if you've already tried them, it wouldn't hurt to give Berserkotron a go!
