One of the best comics I've read in a long long time. If you don't buy this comic now... I'm pretty sure something bad will happen to you.

Bob Byrne's Mister Amperduke is simply brilliant. A completely silent comic, it relies on the strength of its visual storytelling and artwork. It tells the story of the title character's strange hobby, a mix of Lego and little creatures and what happens when their world comes face to face with a monster. It's a story about people's small private troubles, and it's just so perfectly executed. Everything is fixed around a 4x4 grid for the panels per page, and when that is broken up, larger panels are still constrained to the shape of the grid (much like Watchmen was). It's so adhered to, that when Byrne breaks that rule for some dynamic panels later in the story, it's so striking, and creates such a great effect. It's really disciplined adult storytelling, that you don't see much of. The character's are all written well, and it's a testament to any writer than 150 pages in you are never confused about what is happened. Everyone's jobs and actions are explained through the visuals.

The artwork is superb. Each single panel is vital to the story, and each one is drawn with care and attention to detail. The artwork style you immediately get used to, it's a simple style that also contains much more detail in it. Byrne has created these characters entirely through the way we see them act and their facial expressions and movements, and you really do get a sense of characters like this, as there's no trickery or lies behind a characters movements, as you may find with their words. It's really hard to fault artwork like this, it's so settled in it's own style that there is very little noticeable wrong - which is the biggest praise I can really give.

Mister Amperduke was one of those rare stories that you read and have to read again straight away. Not because it was confusing or there was just one really good bit you want to read again, but because everything about it is great, and it's both a simple story and a deeper story. You'll catch things you missed the second time, the third time, the fourth time you read it. My only fault with it is there aren't more Mister Amperduke stories around! With the characters and the idea, a million different tales could come about from it. At a cover price of £11.95, it may seem steep compared to other indie comics around, but this isn't any other comic.
